Passing through a long journey since 1860, Basurhat Municipal School in the district of 24
parganas got the recognition of the Calcutta University on January 24, 1877 under the new name
“Basirhat High School”. The first Headmaster of the school was Shri Jogneswar Mondal.
The journey that had its onset 142 years ago gradually attained its maturity by virtue of unnumbered
learners, teachers and well-wishers who contributed and sanctified the school campus
directly and indirectly making the campus buzzing with prospect and prosperity with perfection.
Time passed. The small sapling of 1877 is now a full-fledged tree establishing and occupying
a permanent seat of awe and veneration in the mind of the common rank and file in India and abroad.
Many a student of this prestigious institution are dissipated and well – established in almost all the
corners of the world, glorifying the name of the school more and more to be imitated and inspired by
the posterity.

The number of posts of teachers in this large institution is 52, though due to retirement of
teachers ,the school is now running with 38 teachers along with seven non-teaching staff, four parateachers who are engaged in the mission of man-making to educate and enlighten more than two
thousand learners besides constructing their moral character and overall development.
This traditional alma mater is providing quality teaching in the streams of Science and Arts.
The Commerce department equipped with necessary infrastructure will start as soon as it gets teachers.
This school is in proud possession of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Computer and
Language labs which despite enriching the students,require more infrastructural development for
the greater interest of the student-aspirants. Efforts are on towards setting up of a smart and digital
classroom.

Every year, many a student glorify the name of the school with exceptional results throughout
the State in Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations, JEE etc. Besides, going on with the
teaching-learning procedures, this prestigious institution has become almost a cynosure of the inculcation of Art and Culture with a view to building up as well as strengthening the aesthetic development of the young learners. Worth mentioning: CCRT (Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, Ministry of Culture, Govt of India), KVPY, NTSE, NMMS, National Science Olyampiad etc. wherein students and teachers from other districts take part enthusiastically.

In the sphere of games and sports, the students of the school have established their names
as proficient aspirants both in national and international levels. In the National parade on the Rajpath
during the Republic Day Celebrations at New Delhi, the NCC Cadets frequently take glorious part.
Our aim and objective is to promote Basirhat High School to an ideal temple of learning, to
groom and enlighten a galaxy of healthy, humble, righteous and wise students who will arrest the appreciation of every one, turning the institution into an icon of education in the true sense of the term.
