
Dr. Amalendu Dutta: First president of AABHS – A man of Unfathomable Knowledge & Inspiration
A bold, forward looking, naturally talented leader who was born and raised in the small & quite town of Basirhat, Dr. Amalendu Dutta, a gem of the town rose to an enviable height by his own strength and capability. He had spent his sweet childhood like any other boys in the town and completed his School Final examination from Basirhat High School in 1958. At this point of time, realizing the high potential of the boy, his father, decided to send him to Belur Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir from where he completed his Intermediate Science in 1960. Academically, a brilliant student, Dr. Dutta graduated in Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University in 1964 and did his masters (M. Tech) in Petroleum Refinery Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1966. Furthermore, he did not stop his academic journey there and went on pursuing his research ambition in IIT Kharagpur until he successfully obtained the Doctorate Degree in Chemical Engineering while teaching in the premier Institute during 1967-70. Followed by his tall academic career, he took up an engineering job in Engineers India Limited (EIL), Delhi and Center for High Technology, Ministry of Petroleum during 1970-90. From 1990 to 2015, he worked in various private consultancy companies like Triune Project, John Brown, Valdale, KTI / Technip, Reliance, S&B (America) etc. contributing significant engineering marvels to these companies and to our nation. Unstoppable Dr. Dutta, then took up the role of Adviser in a few companies before calling it a day in 2015.
An academician and an engineer, Dr. Amalendu Dutta also believes that learning and seeking has no boundary, which has indulged him putting his hands in the domain of modern art and performing art throughout his life. While studying in Belur and Jadavpur, he wanted to learn drawing & painting. So did he, not only learning but mastering it and took part in a painting exhibition in Jadavpur, Kolkata. Mr. Chittaranjan Ghosh was his favorite teacher in the school, and after his death, Dr. Dutta was approached to draw a picture of his academic Guru by Mr. Ghosh’s son and wife. He made an oil painting of his favorite teacher, which is still hanging in the wall of their house. Later, when Head of Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Kharagpur, Professor Nandi retired, he was given a large portrait of him drawn by Dr. Dutta at his farewell function. He feels proud and elated saying in his own word that he has painted Rabithakur, Lenin, and various sceneries for gifting to his friends.

He is also well known for his enthusiasm to play active role in drama from his school days. He played many character roles while studying in Belur, Jadavpur and Khargpur. Still at the age of 79, he is not shy of taking a role in a drama every year that are staged in the Puja pandals or during Alumni meet of Jadavpur University in Delhi, where he is residing in for many decades in the past.

In his latest venture since 2017, he took the initiative to form an Alumni Association Basirhat High School (AABHS) with the cooperation of the school administration and hundreds of alumni. He remained President of the association until September 2021 and currently playing a key role in the association. Dr. Dutta, one of many gems of Basirhat town, has glorified the name of Basirhat High School through his numerous dedicated activities and commitment to serve with teen-age like zeal and zest until today. Now, he says gleefully in a voice of satisfaction, ‘I am done and dusted, all kinds of ghosts have come down from my neck. Now-a-days I just like to write and spend time gardening. Rest is in the hands of almighty as I am getting ready to take off for the eternity.’
Then, with all praise and hopes for AABHS, he wishes his Alma Mater Basirhat High School a great success. We are proud to have him as our leader in AABHS whose directions shall we follow to serve the alumni and the school for the years to come.
